“Asking” involves admitting that you don’t know something or that you may be in need of something; therefore, it is not shocking that many don’t even think about asking our Heavenly Father anything until they have exhausted all their time, intellect, and resources. The biggest culprit that hinders one from asking is pride. Pride says, “I can do it on my own”, or “I’m not asking anyone for anything”, for fear of appearing weak or needy in a certain area.
As children of the Most High God, we must realize that “self dependence” sets us at odds with God and His Holy Word. Instead of depending on ourselves, we must learn to truly depend and/or rely on God’s help. The Word of God states, ” Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not, James 4:2. This scripture clearly paints the picture of the results of NOT “asking”.
Meditate on these scriptures related to “asking”:
- Matthew 7:7 – ASK and it shall be given to you…
- Matthew 18:19 – Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ASK, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven
- John 14:13-14 – And whatsoever ye shall ASK in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ASK any thing in my name, I will do it
- 1 John 5:14-15 – And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ASK any thing according to His will, He heareth us: And if we know that He hear us, whatsoever we ASK, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of Him
As we recondition ourselves to rely on our Heavenly Father regarding our daily lives, future, afflictions and hardships, we must also be careful to not put “asking” before relationship. God desires relationship first. A genuine heart that seeks relationship with Him first, will surely be in alignment with the desires of God, thus, not “asking” amiss, but asking only those things that align with the Word of God.
